Above is a juxtaposition of maps of Gillford Township (top), Zumbro Township (lower left) and Hyde Park Township (blank, except for part of Section 6 as shown). David Soules arrived later than his Whaley relatives, entering his 40 acres of land on 4 January 1865 and making improvements over the next five years. All of these patent documents concern this same land. This map explains the family recollection that Cyrenus and Uriah operated a ferry in this location, since their father-in-law David Soules owned land on both sides of the Zumbro River.
